Marvel Rivals Modding Persists Despite Season 1 Bans
Players of Marvel Rivals are pushing their luck with account bans by continuing to use mods, even after a crackdown that coincided with the launch of Season 1. Since the game's successful debut in December, players have been customizing their gameplay with mods, such as turning Iron Man into Vegeta from Dragon Ball and Mantis into a goth character. There's also a popular mod that transforms Jeff the Land Shark into Pochita from Chainsaw Man.
Last week, with the introduction of the Fantastic Four and the start of Season 1, Marvel Rivals implemented a stealth mod restriction through asset hash checking. NetEase, the developer, reminded players through IGN that the game's terms of service strictly prohibit mods, cheats, bots, hacks, or any unauthorized third-party software. They reiterated their stance in a statement: "It is not recommended to modify any game files, as doing so carries the risk of getting banned."

Despite these warnings, some players remain undaunted. A new workaround has surfaced and is circulating widely online. Although it requires more steps than before, it remains accessible for most PC users. Modder Prafit, who shared the workaround on Nexus Mods, cautioned users: "Use at your own risk," emphasizing that players are bypassing a system designed to prevent modding since the Season 1 update. "No-one knows if NetEase will ban you, but they have never issued permabans as far as we know," Prafit added.
The modding community has not slowed down, with new mods emerging that capitalize on the addition of Fantastic Four characters. A notable example is Ercuallo's mod, which turns Mister Fantastic into Luffy from the manga One Piece. This Luffy mod has seen over 5,000 downloads in just two days since its release, according to Nexus Mods.

The ongoing question for Marvel Rivals modders and users is whether NetEase will follow through with bans. So far, no instances of players being banned for using mods have been reported, but the availability of workarounds might prompt further action from the developers.
NetEase's potential reasons for banning mods include lost revenue from skin sales, intellectual property concerns, and the risk of mods disrupting gameplay balance or affecting game performance. Modder Prafit noted that their temporary workaround is best suited for those with high-performance PCs.
