The 10 Best Game Boy Advance & Nintendo DS Games on Nintendo Switch – SwitchArcade Special
A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch, focusing on Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the eShop. Surprisingly, fewer ports exist than on other consoles. This list highlights ten favorites – four GBA and six DS games – presented without any particular ranking. Let's dive in!
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Part of Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a slight edge, this GBA iteration is a solid alternative. A fun comparison piece, offering a streamlined experience. Steel Empire is enjoyable regardless of the platform, appealing even to non-shooter fans.
Mega Man Zero – Included in Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

The Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, but the Game Boy Advance saw the rise of a true successor: Mega Man Zero. This marks the beginning of an excellent side-scrolling action series, though its initial entry shows some minor imperfections in presentation. These are refined in later installments, but starting with the first game is recommended.
Mega Man Battle Network – Included in Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

A Mega Man double-feature! Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network offer distinct gameplay experiences. Battle Network is an RPG with a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The virtual world concept is cleverly executed. While later installments show diminishing returns, the original offers ample enjoyment.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Included in Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

The Castlevania Advance Collection is worth owning, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For many, it's even preferred over the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. The soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the gameplay is highly engaging. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal. A top-tier GBA title.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

The original Shantae was a cult classic, but limited distribution hindered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge on DSiWare propelled the Half-Genie Hero to greater fame. Its success ensured continued appearances across console generations. Interestingly, it's somewhat a successor to an unreleased GBA title, which is also slated for release soon.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Included in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Arguably a GBA game (its origin), Ace Attorney blends investigation and courtroom drama with humorous storytelling. The first game is exceptional, though later entries are also strong contenders.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick features compelling writing and unique gameplay. As a ghost, you manipulate objects to save others while uncovering your own past. A captivating experience, deserving of wider recognition.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

A top-tier Nintendo DS game, best experienced on its original hardware. While ports exist, the Switch version is a viable alternative for those without a DS. A truly exceptional game.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Included in Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all three DS Castlevania games, all worth playing. Dawn of Sorrow benefits from improved button controls over its original touch controls.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Included in Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

The Etrian Odyssey series thrives on the DS/3DS, but this adaptation works well. Each game is a substantial RPG, with Etrian Odyssey III being the largest and most rewarding.
