These five cards form a cohesive "cycle," each belonging to one of Magic's colors, yet sharing common design elements. They are all affordable, common-rarity creatures with abilities linked to one of Tarkir's three-color clans, and a feature that converts mana into a color associated with that clan.

Wizards of the Coast Senior Game Designer Adam Prosak explains, "Three-color limited environments require substantial mana fixing across all rarities. Our goal was to ensure many decks could easily access mana fixing, so we crafted several designs to address this. These creatures not only contribute to your board presence but also help develop your mana, offering a strategic advantage over other designs like tapped lands, which solely focus on mana and can cause you to fall behind."

Senior Worldbuilding Designer Lauren Bond highlights the dual focus on mechanics and storytelling within this cycle, noting, "Common cards are a fantastic avenue to showcase the world of our sets. In Tarkir: Dragonstorm, we delve into how these clans have evolved since their last appearance. From the action-oriented Jeskai monks to the mystical Temur Whispers, the protective Sultai Nagas, the versatile Mardu military, and the restorative Abzan clerics, each card reflects the rich tapestry of Tarkir's cultures."

Recent Magic sets have faced critiques regarding their reliance on thematic gimmicks, even when revisiting familiar planes. Tarkir: Dragonstorm, however, stands out with its authentic and straightforward approach to returning to Tarkir. Senior Worldbuilding Art Director Forrest Schehl shares, "The feedback we receive is crucial to us at Wizards of the Coast. However, our vision for Tarkir was set long before the release of Murders at Karlov Manor and subsequent sets. Our aim was to blend Dragons and Clans in a novel way, with Dragonstorms at the heart of our design. From the start, Lauren and I felt the weight of responsibility to craft the next chapter of Tarkir with genuine authenticity."

Tarkir: Dragonstorm is available for preorder now, with a scheduled release on April 11 for both physical and digital formats. In-store prerelease events will begin on April 4.
