Adult's First LEGO Buy: Mario Set, No Regrets
As someone who prides themselves on practicality, my spending habits have always been geared toward essentials. Occasionally, I might indulge in a video game when it's on sale, but that's about the extent of my splurging. It wasn't until last year that I even considered diving back into the world of LEGO, something I adored as a child but had drifted away from as I grew older.
Part of my hesitation stemmed from LEGO's pricing. Sure, you can find some sets under $25, but anything linked to popular franchises like movies or video games comes with a heftier price tag. That's why it took me so long to justify purchasing the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant. It's been on sale since October of last year for under $50, and I finally decided it was time to add a quirky potted plant to my desk.

My interest in this set was piqued after reading IGN's review of the Piranha Plant build. Being a lifelong fan of the Mario series, this set seemed like a perfect way to showcase my affection for the franchise. LEGO's botanical line offers some beautiful flower sets that would also enhance my desk, but none match the whimsical yet eerie charm of this Piranha Plant.

Now that I've built it, I'm thrilled to have this set on my desk. It transports me to the Mushroom Kingdom whenever I glance at it, imagining I'm nurturing my little potted Piranha Plant during work hours. The building process was just as enjoyable as the final product. I completed it in one afternoon, yet it was challenging enough to keep me engaged throughout. It's currently the only LEGO Nintendo set I own, but after this positive experience, I'm definitely tempted to expand my collection.

How Much Are You Willing to Spend on a LEGO Set You Love?
As mentioned, LEGO sets can be quite pricey, especially with new adult-targeted sets coming out each year with price tags over $200. It's easy to get carried away and overspend on these delightful creations. For me, the threshold is clear: the Mario LEGO set at under $50 was within my comfort zone. It provided hours of enjoyment during the build and adds a daily dose of joy to my workspace. Is that joy worth more than $50? Perhaps. But for me, $50 is the sweet spot.
