Amazon to shutter its app store on Android after more than ten years on mobile
Amazon is shutting down its Android app store on August 20th, 2024. The service will continue to operate on Fire TV and Fire Tablets. Launched in 2011, the Amazon Appstore's closure marks the end of a more than decade-long run. While this news is likely disappointing for developers and users, Android apps installed from the store are not guaranteed to receive future updates or support.
Alternatively, the timing is somewhat ironic, given the recent rise of alternative app stores. Amazon's Appstore never achieved widespread popularity, likely due to a lack of compelling features to attract users. Competitors like the Epic Games Store, with its free games program, offer significant advantages. This closure serves as a reminder that even large companies can't guarantee long-term support for all ventures.
