How to Obtain Armadillo Scutes in Minecraft

by Riley Apr 01,2025

Introduced in the *Minecraft* 1.20.5 "Armored Paws" update, the Armadillo is a passive mob you'll find in various warm biomes. This creature, adorned with hard "Scutes," is crucial for crafting Wolf Armor, a new way to protect your canine companions. Let's dive into how you can collect Armadillo Scutes in *Minecraft*.

How to Get Armadillo Scutes in Minecraft

Armadillos roam exclusively in warm biomes and often appear in groups of two or three. They have a unique defense mechanism where they roll into a tight ball when approached quickly. To successfully gather Scutes, approach them slowly and carefully to prevent this defensive action.

Keep an eye out for Armadillos in these biomes:

  • Badlands
  • Eroded Badlands
  • Savanna
  • Savanna Plateau
  • Windswept Savanna
  • Wooded Badlands

There are two methods to collect Armadillo Scutes:

1. Watch and Wait

Similar to a Chicken dropping an Egg, an Armadillo will drop one Scute every 5-10 minutes. This method requires no items or effort, making it an easy choice. However, it can be slow and less engaging, especially if you need to craft multiple sets of Wolf Armor.

2. Brushing

The most popular method involves using a Brush, a tool typically used for investigating suspicious sand or gravel. To obtain Scutes, gently brush the Armadillo, yielding one Scute per brushing.

In the Java Edition of *Minecraft*, an unenchanted Brush with full durability can be used on an Armadillo four times before breaking, while in the Bedrock Edition, it lasts for five uses. You can combine two damaged Brushes to repair them, and if they're enchanted, use an Anvil to merge two damaged Enchanted Brushes while retaining both enchantments.

A Brush can be enchanted with Unbreaking, Mending, or Curse of Vanishing.

To craft a Brush, you'll need a Feather, a Copper Ingot, and a Stick, arranged vertically in the center column of the Crafting Table.

Approach the Armadillos slowly, and once you're close enough, use the Brush repeatedly to collect as many Scutes as your crafted Brushes allow. With enough Scutes (six per suit of Wolf Armor), head to the Crafting Table to create armor for your Wolves.
