In *Avowed*, you have the option to choose from five distinct Backgrounds, each enriching your character's story and gameplay. While each Background starts with a unique weapon, all can utilize any equipment and abilities throughout the game. Let's explore the narrative roles of each Background:

Arcane Scholar: As an Arcane Scholar, your character boasts an academic background, having graduated from Bragganhyl Academy. Your published work on soul lineages threatened a local lord, leading to your arrest, but the emperor saw value in your knowledge and recruited you for the imperial court archives. This Background offers dialogue choices centered around the occult, legal precedent, historical observations, and poetry.

Court Augur: This Background brings a tragic backstory, with your character fleeing to Highcrown after being suspected of causing a crop failure with your mystic insights. The emperor then elevates you to his personal mystic. Court Augurs are in tune with the spiritual realm, offering dialogue options related to magic and the gods, making this a fitting choice for players looking to role-play as wizards and connect with the companion Giatta.

Noble Scion: Born into a family of wealth and influence but poor morals, Noble Scions face the fallout of family scandals and disputes. Seeking the emperor's mercy, they become invaluable allies to the empire. This Background is ideal for players who wish to remain loyal to the empire and execute its will across the Living Lands.

Vanguard Scout: Spared from execution, Vanguard Scouts prefer the wilderness over the complexities of city life and politics. Their tracking and spying skills make them valuable assets to the empire. This Background suits players interested in a hunter play style and those who wish to connect with the companion Marius.

War Hero: After quelling a violent Skaenite uprising, War Heroes are rewarded with a position among elite warriors, valued for their loyalty and grit. This is the perfect choice for players aiming to role-play a warrior and relate to the companion Kai.
