Avowed: Single-Player or Co-Op?

Avowed character battling a monstrous bear-like creature

While Avowed has drawn comparisons to Obsidian's The Outer Worlds in a fantasy setting, one key difference remains - this is a strictly single-player adventure. Despite early plans, multiplayer features didn't make the final cut for this highly anticipated RPG.

Is Multiplayer Available in Avowed?

The answer is straightforward: Avowed doesn't offer any form of multiplayer whatsoever. You won't find cooperative play, competitive PvP, or any online interactions in the game's fantasy world. While you'll recruit AI companions similar to The Outer Worlds, every character you meet - friend or foe - will be computer-controlled.

This means no cooperative dungeon diving with friends, no player invasions to spice up your adventure, and no competitive arena battles. The experience remains pure single-player fantasy throughout your journey through the Living Lands.

Why Was Multiplayer Removed?

The developers at Obsidian Entertainment originally envisioned Avowed with cooperative play as a core feature. In fact, co-op was initially touted as a selling point to potential investors during early development stages. However, the team later decided to focus their efforts elsewhere, ultimately removing multiplayer functionality entirely.

This strategic shift suggests Obsidian prioritized crafting a deeper single-player experience over implementing multiplayer elements. The decision mirrors their approach with The Outer Worlds, where they similarly focused on delivering a rich, narrative-driven adventure without multiplayer distractions.

Are There Any Modding Possibilities?

Currently, no public mods exist to add multiplayer functionality to Avowed. While dedicated modders eventually created co-op features for Skyrim years after release, such an undertaking would require significant technical expertise and time investment. Obsidian has also confirmed they have no plans to add official multiplayer support post-launch.

For players craving a shared fantasy adventure, you'll need to look elsewhere - Avowed remains firmly in the single-player RPG tradition that Obsidian has perfected over the years.
