In an interview with Game Developer, Patel highlighted Avowed's focus on player agency. Every decision, big or small, contributes to a unique and personalized playthrough. The game encourages players to reflect on their choices and motivations, prompting introspection on their engagement with the narrative.

"It's about providing players with constant opportunities to express and explore their character's alignment," Patel explained. "The game encourages you to consider your feelings at each moment: excitement, curiosity, waning interest. It's about what keeps you engaged from moment to moment."

The choices players make directly impact their journey through Eora, particularly their quest for political power within The Living Lands. The narrative unfolds based on discoveries made during exploration. "I've really enjoyed weaving together the storylines across these different worlds," Patel added.

Players assume the role of an Aedyran Empire envoy investigating a spiritual plague, all while pursuing their political ambitions. "Giving players rich content to explore—that's what creates meaningful roleplay," Patel emphasized. "It's about who you want to be in this world and how the game's situations allow you to express that identity."

Beyond the RPG mechanics, Avowed features strategic combat combining magic, swords, and firearms. "The abilities and weapon combinations you select drastically alter each playthrough," Patel noted.

Furthermore, Patel confirmed to IGN the game boasts numerous endings, resulting from a multitude of choice combinations. "We have double-digit ending slides, and countless combinations are possible," she revealed. "True to Obsidian's style, your ending is a direct reflection of your actions and choices throughout the game."
