Larian Studios, creators of the 2023 Game of the Year, Baldur's Gate 3, have revealed details about a shelved project: a playable Baldur's Gate 4.

In a recent interview with PC Gamer, CEO Swen Vincke disclosed that a Baldur's Gate 3 sequel, already in a playable state, was abandoned. While acknowledging it was a potentially well-received project, the team felt hesitant to commit to another extensive D&D project. The prospect of potentially years of further development led to the decision to pursue original concepts instead.

The decision, according to Vincke, significantly boosted team morale. The studio is now focused on two unannounced projects, described as their most ambitious yet. A planned Baldur's Gate 3 DLC was also abandoned for similar reasons.

High Morale and Future Projects

The team's positive outlook following the decision suggests a renewed creative energy. While a Divinity sequel was previously hinted at, Vincke confirmed it won't be Divinity: Original Sin 3, promising a departure from fan expectations.

Baldur's Gate 3's final major patch, slated for Fall 2024, will include mod support, cross-play, and new evil endings. The future for Larian Studios looks bright, focused on fresh ideas and high team morale.
