Baldur’s Gate Studio Teases Next Game

by Brooklyn Feb 23,2025

Larian Studios, following the phenomenal success of Baldur's Gate 3, has officially shifted its development focus to a new, unannounced project. While limited support for BG3 will continue, including the upcoming Patch 8 with new features, the studio is largely moving on.

Before the 2023 release of BG3, Larian Studios established itself as a CRPG powerhouse with the Divinity: Original Sin series. This success paved the way for their acquisition of the Baldur's Gate license, exceeding expectations and earning numerous Game of the Year awards. The game's popularity significantly boosted Larian's reputation, creating substantial anticipation for their next venture.

In a statement, Larian confirmed their complete dedication to this new title, implementing a media blackout to minimize distractions. While Patch 8 is on the horizon, future BG3 support appears minimal.

The nature of Larian's next project remains shrouded in mystery. Despite opening a new studio in mid-2024 to support two ambitious RPGs, the current status of these projects is unclear. Speculation ranges from a Divinity: Original Sin 3 to a completely new IP. Details are expected to remain scarce for the foreseeable future.

The future of the Baldur's Gate franchise is equally uncertain. Wizards of the Coast faces the challenge of finding a worthy successor, a task made more difficult by the high standards set by BG3. However, the possibility of familiar faces returning in future installments remains, as several BG3 actors have expressed interest in reprising their roles.
