Biggest Pokémon Card Gainers and Losers - May 9

by Isabella May 14,2025

Another week brings more excitement and volatility to the Pokémon TCG single card market as trainers eagerly await the release of Destined Rivals. Fortunately, the Black Bolt and White Flare Pokémon Center preorders managed to dodge a bot takeover this time.

This week, the most dramatic price drop belongs to Greninja ex 214/167, which has plummeted nearly 50% since the start of the year. We're also witnessing significant price reductions across the Obsidian Flames and elusive 151 expansions. On the other hand, Dragonite V from Evolving Skies is experiencing a surge, nearly doubling in value, and its stunning artwork suggests it was always undervalued.

Charizard V Alt Art continues to impress with its depiction of a battle against Venusaur and is steadily climbing in value. Meanwhile, Rayquazza VMAX Alt Art is soaring, gaining an additional $100 in value since the beginning of the year. Let's explore the biggest climbers and crashers in the Pokémon TCG market this week.

Pokémon Card Crashes

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon CompanyWhile we're finally seeing a noticeable increase in the value of Sword and Shield era Pokémon cards, Scarlet and Violet series cards are settling into more reasonable prices.

Alakazam ex SIR from 151 is a stunning card, and it's now 34% lower than at the beginning of March. There's no reason not to add Uri Gellar's grandad to your collection this year.

Bulbasaur was my first starter Pokémon when I first played Pokémon Blue, so Bulbasaur IR holds a special place in my heart. This card has seen a massive 52% drop since mid-March, making it an affordable and beautiful addition to any collection.

Moving on to Obsidian Flames, Ninetales IR has always been one of the set's standout cards. If you're a fan, now's the time to grab it as it's crashed by 40% since February to a reasonable $18.17.

The biggest crasher this month is Greninja ex SIR, which was once poised to be the most expensive Scarlet and Violet era card. However, with the release of Prismatic Evolutions, the fear of missing out intensified. It's still a fantastic card holding steady at $275, but imagine paying $411.62 at the end of February. Ouch.

Pokémon Card Climbers

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon CompanyTurning to this week's climbers, Rayquazza VMAX alt art remains a coveted gem of the Sword and Shield era. Already a $500+ card, it's now at $649.99 and showing no signs of slowing down. It could potentially reach the $1,000 mark in a few years, so if you can afford it, it's a wise investment.

I can't get enough of Kanto, and Charizard V Alt Art delivers with its dynamic battle against Venusaur. The angle is captivating, giving the card a sense of movement rather than the static shots common in many Pokémon cards (looking at you, WotC era). It's gained another $40 since January and could easily surpass $200 before the year ends.

It's nearly doubled in value since mid-January, now at a solid $225. Don't miss out on this card before it flies even higher. Did you catch last week's article?
