Blade Trilogy Writer Wonders: Why Is MCU Reboot Taking So Long?
The writer behind the iconic Wesley Snipes-led Blade trilogy, David S. Goyer, has expressed his readiness to step in and help Marvel Studios navigate the troubled waters of Mahershala Ali’s long-awaited MCU reboot. The project, which was initially announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, has faced numerous setbacks and delays, leaving fans and industry insiders alike wondering about its future.
Recent developments have confirmed the project's uncertain status. Last month, acclaimed artist and DJ Flying Lotus, who was set to compose music for the film, shared on X/Twitter that the project had fallen through. "I guess we are so far from it even being a possibility now but. Yeah I was signed on to write music for the new BLADE movie before it fell thru," he stated, adding a note of doubt about its potential revival. This revelation came shortly after costume designer Ruth E. Carter confirmed on The John Campea Show that she was slated to work on the film, which was intended to be set in the 1920s, promising unique and captivating costume designs.
Actor Delroy Lindo, who was also attached to the project, shared his disappointment with Entertainment Weekly. He described his initial excitement about the inclusive and innovative approach Marvel had proposed, only to see the project derail unexpectedly. "When Marvel came to me, they seemed to be really interested in my input... And then, for whatever reason, it just went off the rails," Lindo recounted.
Despite these setbacks, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige remains committed to the project. In an interview with Omelete in November 2024, Feige reaffirmed their dedication to bringing Blade to the MCU, stating, "We are committed to Blade. We love the character, we love Mahershala's take on him. And rest assured: whenever we change direction with a project, or are still figuring out how it fits into our schedule, we let the audience know. You're all up to date on what's happening. But I can tell you that the character will indeed make it to the MCU."
David S. Goyer, intrigued by the delays, expressed his willingness to contribute to the reboot. "I would," Goyer told ScreenRant when asked about writing the new Blade film. "I’ve always loved the character and I love him. I’ve been sitting on the sidelines wondering, ‘What in the world is going on? Why is it taking so long?’ Because I’m a huge Marvel fan myself, and I’ve just been totally puzzled."
Meanwhile, the MCU continues to thrive with other projects. The recent film Deadpool & Wolverine, which included a cameo from Wesley Snipes reprising his role as Blade, grossed an impressive $1.3 billion globally. Ryan Reynolds, who stars as Deadpool, has called for Snipes' Blade to receive a fitting send-off similar to Hugh Jackman’s Logan, recognizing the original Blade films' pivotal role in paving the way for the superhero genre. "There is no Fox Marvel Universe or MCU without Blade first creating a market," Reynolds emphasized on X/Twitter. "He’s Marvel Daddy. Please retweet for a Logan-like send-off."
In other developments, Reynolds is reportedly in the early stages of developing a Deadpool and X-Men ensemble film, as reported by THR. This project would see Deadpool sharing the spotlight with other X-Men characters, allowing them to take center stage in innovative ways.
