Ed Boon Hints at T-1000 Fatality and Future DLC for Mortal Kombat 1
Mortal Kombat 1's development chief, Ed Boon, has stirred excitement within the gaming community by sharing a sneak peek of the T-1000 Terminator's Fatality on social media. This reveal comes hot on the heels of the release of guest character Conan the Barbarian, marking a significant milestone for the game as Boon announced that Mortal Kombat 1 has surpassed five million copies sold, up from the previously reported four million.
The teaser clip of T-1000's Fatality is a nod to fans of Terminator 2, showcasing the character driving a smashed-up truck into his opponent, reminiscent of the iconic chase scene from the movie. This thrilling glimpse into the upcoming content has fans buzzing with anticipation.
Boon's tweet not only highlighted the new Fatality but also hinted at more exciting developments on the horizon. His comment, "With Conan getting into player’s hands, we are excited to keep trucking forward with future DLC!" has sparked speculation about additional downloadable content beyond the current Khaos Reigns expansion, which includes T-1000 as its final character alongside Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian.
The possibility of a Kombat Pack 3 has been a topic of interest among fans, especially in light of Mortal Kombat 1's sales success. Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of developer NetherRealm, has expressed continued faith in the Mortal Kombat franchise. In November, CEO David Zaslav emphasized the company's commitment to focusing on four key titles, with Mortal Kombat being one of them.
Despite the focus on Mortal Kombat, Ed Boon has assured fans that NetherRealm has not forgotten about its other beloved series, Injustice. In a September statement, Boon mentioned that the studio had decided on its next game three years prior but promised ongoing support for Mortal Kombat 1. While many speculate that the next title could be Injustice 3, neither NetherRealm nor Warner Bros. has confirmed this.
The Injustice series, which began with Injustice: Gods Among Us in 2013 and continued with Injustice 2 in 2017, has been a significant part of NetherRealm's portfolio. However, the studio chose to release Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019 and then the soft reboot, Mortal Kombat 1, in 2023, instead of alternating between the two franchises as previously expected.
In an interview with IGN in June 2023, Boon shed some light on the decision to focus on another Mortal Kombat game. He cited the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition to a newer version of the Unreal game engine as key factors. Mortal Kombat 11 was built on Unreal Engine 3, while Mortal Kombat 1 utilizes Unreal Engine 4. Boon emphasized the studio's commitment to safety during the pandemic and their desire to leverage the new engine's capabilities.
When asked about the future of the Injustice franchise, Boon was reassuring, stating, "Not at all," indicating that the door remains open for more Injustice games. This assurance, coupled with the ongoing success and support for Mortal Kombat 1, keeps fans eagerly awaiting what NetherRealm has in store next.
