"Breakout Beyond: A Fresh Twist on Atari's Classic"

by Nathan May 23,2025

The iconic 1976 game Breakout is set for a modern transformation with the upcoming release of Breakout Beyond. This new take on Atari's classic brick-breaker maintains the traditional paddle-and-ball mechanic but introduces a unique sideways progression, moving players from left to right.

Developed by Choice Provisions, the creators behind the BIT.TRIP series, Breakout Beyond challenges players to break bricks as they progress. As players build combos, the game's lights and effects become more intense, enhancing the visual experience. Special bricks trigger a variety of effects, from massive explosions to an actual laser cannon, adding excitement and unpredictability to the gameplay.

The game will feature 72 meticulously designed levels, and for those looking for endless challenges, an unlockable endless mode with a global leaderboard will be available. Additionally, Breakout Beyond offers a local two-player co-op mode, allowing friends to join in on the brick-breaking fun.

Originally intended as an exclusive title for the Intellivision Amico back in 2020, Breakout Beyond's development was taken over by Atari. Ethan Stearns, Atari's senior director of games publishing, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, "We're thrilled to be able to bring this gem to our players. The team thought it was a brilliant concept, preserving the heart of Breakout's gameplay while also giving the formula a completely new spin. Breakout Beyond is a worthy new entry into the Breakout pantheon, and we can't wait to see the insane combos brick-breakers will make."

The Intellivision Amico, initially announced in 2018 with a planned 2020 release, has faced numerous setbacks and delays, and it remains unreleased. Last year, Atari acquired the branding and rights to Intellivision, though this did not include the Amico console itself.

Breakout Beyond is slated for release later this year across multiple platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Atari VCS, ensuring that fans of all gaming systems can enjoy this revitalized classic.
