Capcom Updates ‘Resident Evil 4′, ‘Resident Evil Village’, and ‘Resident Evil 7’ on iOS With Online DRM

TouchArcade Rating:

Updates for premium mobile ports usually improve optimization or compatibility. However, Capcom's recent update for Resident Evil 7 biohazard, Resident Evil 4 Remake, and Resident Evil Village on iOS and iPadOS introduces an online DRM system. This DRM checks your purchase history upon launching the games, verifying ownership of the game and any DLC. Refusal results in game closure. While this takes only a few seconds with an internet connection, it renders all three titles unplayable offline—a significant change from their previous offline functionality.

Pre-update, all three games launched and functioned offline. This update mandates online verification on every launch. This is a negative change for those who purchased the games, as it diminishes their value. While some may not be affected, the forced online DRM is concerning. Hopefully, Capcom will revise their purchase verification method, perhaps implementing it less frequently. This situation unfortunately impacts the recommendation of Capcom's premium mobile ports.

The games remain free to try. Download Resident Evil 7 biohazard on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS here. Get Resident Evil 4 Remake on the App Store here and Resident Evil Village here. Read my reviews here, here, and here. Do you own these Resident Evil titles on iOS? What are your thoughts on this update?
