Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 (Civ 7) is gearing up for an exclusive launch on Meta Quest 3 and 3S. 2K Games and Firaxis Games made this exciting announcement on February 8, 2025, during the Civ World Summit Event, marking the franchise's first foray into virtual and mixed reality gaming.

Civ 7 Executive Franchise Producer Dennis Shirk expressed his enthusiasm in a blog post on 2K's website, stating, We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!

Meta Director of Games Chris Pruett shared his confidence in the partnership, saying, With the recent release of Meta Quest 3S and our strongest games and entertainment portfolio yet, it’s an awesome time for mixed reality. Civilization VII - VR is further evidence of that momentum: it’s a genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans.

It's worth noting that while Civ 7 will be available on PlayStation consoles, Civ 7 VR will not be released on PSVR2 at this time.

Board-Game Like Construction and Online Multiplayer

Civ 7 VR introduces players to a Command Table, allowing them to navigate the world and strategize as if playing a tabletop game. Players can choose to "peer down from high above or lean all the way in to appreciate the finer details of buildings and units."

The game supports both immersive virtual reality and mixed reality, with seamless switching between modes. In virtual reality, players find themselves in an ornate museum, overlooking a vista tailored to their chosen leader. In mixed reality, the Command Table integrates with the player's physical environment.

Civ 7 VR offers a variety of play modes, including single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer. Up to four players with Meta Quest 3 or 3S can participate, filling their games with AI-controlled opponents or competing against friends. Players can see their friends and opponents as their selected world leaders across the Command Table. Online multiplayer requires both a 2K Account and a Meta Account.

Firaxis Games Respond to Player Feedback

Firaxis Games has actively addressed feedback from players during Civ 7’s early access phase. Announced via their official Twitter (X) page, the team is committed to resolving issues raised by the community. Civ 7's Advanced Access began on February 6, 2025, for those who purchased the Deluxe Edition or Founder’s Edition. The game has garnered mixed reviews on Steam, with a significant focus on UI challenges that have made key gameplay information hard to access.

In response, Firaxis Games has prioritized UI improvements, aiming to "make UI interactions more intuitive, improve map readability, fix areas of polish like formatting, and more." They are also considering community-requested features such as adding teams to multiplayer games, offering a wider variety of map types, and more. A quality-of-life update is slated for March, focusing on "quality-of-life UI adjustments, ongoing AI balance and improvement, adjustments to diplomacy and crises, plus additional bug fixes."

Civilization 7 VR is anticipated to launch in Spring 2025 exclusively on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, though a specific release date remains undisclosed. Meanwhile, Civilization 7 is currently in early access and will see a global release on February 11, 2025, across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
