Civ 7 Won't Have Gandhi to Go Nuclear, But Did He Ever?
The enduring legend of "Nuclear Gandhi" from the original Civilization game is a well-known gaming myth. But was this infamous bug actually real? This article explores the history and truth behind the Nuclear Gandhi legend.

The Myth of Nuclear Gandhi:
Gaming communities often develop their own myths and legends. The story of Nuclear Gandhi, a seemingly peaceful leader unexpectedly unleashing nuclear devastation, is one such tale. The legend claimed a bug in the original Civilization game for MS-DOS caused Gandhi's aggression level to overflow, transforming him into a nuclear warmonger.

The myth suggests Gandhi's initial low aggression value (1), when reduced further by adopting Democracy, caused an 8-bit unsigned integer to overflow to 255, maximizing his aggression. This, combined with the availability of nuclear weapons in the late game, supposedly led to his nuclear rampage.

Debunking the Legend:
The legend of Nuclear Gandhi gained traction in the mid-2010s, long after the original game's release. However, Sid Meier, the game's creator, definitively stated in 2020 that Nuclear Gandhi was impossible. He cited two key reasons: the game's integer variables were signed, preventing overflow, and government types did not affect aggression levels. Brian Reynolds, lead designer of Civilization II, corroborated this, highlighting the limited aggression levels in the original game.

The Genesis of the Myth (and its Revival):
The legend's persistence likely stems from its ironic appeal. While the original game lacked this bug, Civilization V intentionally coded Gandhi with a high preference for nuclear weapons. This, combined with a 2012 entry on TV Tropes, likely fueled the myth's spread.

Civilization VI even playfully acknowledged the myth. However, with Gandhi's absence in Civilization VII, the legend might finally rest.

Despite being debunked, the Nuclear Gandhi legend remains a testament to the power of gaming folklore. It highlights how community narratives can shape and reshape game history, even long after the game's release.
