Concord, Sony's Major Flop, Continues to Get Updates on Steam
Despite its swift demise after launch, Sony's hero shooter, Concord, continues to receive updates on Steam. This unexpected activity has sparked considerable speculation among gamers.
Concord's Post-Launch Steam Updates Fuel Speculation
Free-to-Play Resurgence or Gameplay Overhaul? The Mystery Deepens
Remember Concord? The hero shooter that flopped spectacularly? While officially unavailable since September 6th, its Steam page shows consistent updates.
SteamDB records over 20 updates since September 29th, attributed to accounts like "pmtest," "sonyqae," and "sonyqae_shipping." These names suggest backend improvements and quality assurance testing are underway.
Concord's August launch, priced at $40, was a significant gamble against free-to-play competitors like Overwatch, Valorant, and Apex Legends. The result? A catastrophic failure. Sony pulled the plug just weeks later, offering refunds. Poor player reception and overwhelmingly negative reviews sealed its fate.
So, why the continued updates? Former Firewalk Studios Game Director, Ryan Ellis, hinted at exploring alternative approaches to reach players. This has led to widespread speculation of a free-to-play relaunch, potentially addressing the initial criticism of its high price point.
Sony's reported $400 million investment in Concord suggests a strong motivation to salvage the project. The updates might indicate a significant overhaul, including new features and gameplay improvements to counter the original criticisms of weak character design and uninspired gameplay.
However, Sony remains silent on Concord's future. Will it return with refined mechanics, broader appeal, or a revised monetization strategy? Only Firewalk Studios and Sony possess the answer. Even as a free-to-play title, Concord faces a challenging uphill battle in a saturated market.
Currently, Concord is unavailable, and Sony hasn't issued any official statements. The future of Concord remains uncertain; only time will reveal if it can overcome its initial failure.
