"Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell - Matt Murdock's Dark Knight Returns Experience"
If you're a Daredevil fan, now's definitely a thrilling time to dive deeper into the universe. The beloved Netflix series is making a comeback with Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+, while the comic world is introducing a gripping new miniseries titled Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell. Written by Charles Soule, known for his work on Death of Wolverine, and illustrated by Steve McNiven, this series promises an exciting twist: What if Daredevil got his own version of The Dark Knight Returns?
IGN recently caught up with Soule via email to explore what this means for Matt Murdock. Before diving into the details, take a look at an exclusive preview of Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell #1 in the gallery below, and then read on to discover more about the series and Soule's thoughts on his previous work inspiring Born Again.

Set in a futuristic Marvel Universe where super heroes are largely absent, Cold Day in Hell explores a Daredevil stripped of his powers and grappling with the weight of his past. According to Soule, Matt Murdock is far from the only hero to walk away from the cape and cowl in this timeline.
“Matt's older, for sure,” Soule shares. “We don't specify his exact age, but the idea is that he hung up his Daredevil identity many years ago. It’s not just him—superheroes are nearly forgotten in this world compared to their current prominence. Matt gave up his powers because, as we all know, his abilities stemmed from accidental exposure to radioactive material. Over time, those powers faded. While he retains his combat skills, he hasn't used them in years. He’s now an ordinary older man trying to leave his extraordinary past behind.”
While comparisons to The Dark Knight Returns are inevitable, Soule emphasizes that this series offers a fresh take. “For me, reimagining familiar characters in unfamiliar situations is a powerful way to redefine them for readers,” he explains. “It also clarifies their essence. What remains of Matt Murdock without his traditional super-heroic abilities? Is he still Daredevil? This format lets us strip away the trappings and explore new ideas outside regular continuity.”
Soule adds, “Cold Day in Hell exists in its own corner of the Marvel Universe, where recent events have left lasting scars. Steve and I get creative freedom to introduce cool new concepts rooted in iconic Marvel elements while adding our unique touch. It’s a hallmark of stories like this—to reinvent while staying true to the spirit of the characters.”
Interestingly, this isn’t Soule and McNiven’s first collaboration exploring a hero’s mortality. Their 2014 Death of Wolverine storyline took Wolverine offline for years. When asked if Cold Day in Hell complements that narrative, Soule responds, “Everything we do together feels connected. Working with Steve has evolved into a beautiful partnership. Each project deepens our trust and synergy. This book was especially collaborative—it felt like jazz, with constant back-and-forth feedback. I’m incredibly proud of what we achieved here.”
One of the joys of stories like Cold Day in Hell lies in revisiting beloved characters in their twilight years. The Dark Knight Returns revealed Joker as catatonic and Superman under governmental control. Soule hints at surprising developments for Daredevil’s allies and foes but keeps specifics under wraps.
"Don’t want to spoil too much," Soule teases. "That’s part of the excitement!"
With Cold Day in Hell #1 hitting shelves on April 2, 2025, Marvel is clearly riding the wave of interest sparked by Born Again. Soule believes the series serves as an accessible entry point for new readers, requiring only basic knowledge of Daredevil’s origin.
“I think so! It’s crafted to appeal even to those unfamiliar with extensive Daredevil lore. Basic knowledge—blind lawyer with enhanced senses and ninja training—is enough. Familiarity with key allies and villains enhances the experience but isn’t required.”
On the topic of Born Again, it’s evident the show draws inspiration from Soule’s 2015-2018 run. Elements like Wilson Fisk’s mayoralty and the enigmatic Muse echo his tenure. Soule confirms further nods to his work appear subtly throughout the series.
"I've seen the entire season, and my Daredevil run is everywhere—from Mayor Fisk to Muse to broader themes. It’s surreal seeing these ideas come to life after years in notebooks. Fans will love it."
