Destiny 2 Username Glitch: Bungie Issues Name Change Tokens

Bungie's Response to the Mass Username Change

Following a recent update (around August 14th), many Destiny 2 players discovered their Bungie Names had been unexpectedly replaced with "Guardian" followed by a random number sequence. This widespread issue stemmed from a bug in Bungie's name moderation system.

Bungie acknowledged the problem on Twitter (X), stating they were investigating the issue affecting a large number of accounts. They promised further information, including a free name change token for all players.

Bungie's name moderation usually flags and changes usernames violating their terms of service (offensive language, personal information, etc.). However, this glitch impacted numerous players with perfectly acceptable names, some using the same name since 2015.

Bungie swiftly investigated and identified the root cause. They deployed a server-side fix to prevent further accidental name changes. While the fix is in place, Bungie confirmed plans to distribute a name change token to every player to rectify the situation. They are committed to keeping players updated on the token distribution timeline.

Players affected by this unforeseen issue are urged to remain patient and await further announcements from Bungie. The promised name change tokens and additional communication are expected soon.
