"Like a Dragon: Yakuza Series Teaser Released"

Like a Dragon: Yakuza to Premiere on October 24
A Fresh Take on Kazuma Kiryu
The teaser introduces Japanese actor Ryoma Takeuchi as the iconic protagonist Kazuma Kiryu, and Kento Kaku as the series' primary antagonist, Akira Nishikiyama. Masayoshi Yokoyama, Director of RGG Studio, praised the fresh interpretations brought by Takeuchi, known for his role in 'Kamen Rider Drive', and Kaku. "To tell you the truth, their portrayal of the characters are totally different from the original story," Yokoyama shared in a Sega interview at SDCC. "But that’s what’s great about it." He appreciated the new perspective on characters that the game had already perfected, highlighting the unique approach of the live-action series.
The teaser briefly showcased the iconic Coliseum in Underground Purgatory and Kiryu’s confrontation with Futoshi Shimano. The series is set to explore the lives of fierce yet passionate gangsters and the vibrant community of Kamurochō, a fictional district inspired by Tokyo's notorious Shinjuku ward's Kabukichō. Loosely based on the first game, the series delves into the lives of Kazuma Kiryu and his childhood friends, revealing aspects of Kiryu's character that previous games couldn't fully explore.
Sega’s Interview with Masayoshi Yokoyama
Addressing fan concerns about maintaining the game's unique blend of grit and humor, Yokoyama assured that the series will capture "aspects of the original’s essence." In his interview with Sega at SDCC, he expressed his fear that the adaptation might simply imitate the game. Instead, he aimed for viewers to experience "Like a Dragon" as if it were their first encounter with the series. "To be honest, it was so good to the level I was jealous," Yokoyama admitted. "We created the setting 20 years ago, but they were able to make it their own… Yet they didn’t neglect the original story."
Yokoyama's enthusiasm was palpable as he described his reaction to the show, stating, "If you’re new to the game, it’s a new world. If you know it, you’ll be grinning the whole time." He also hinted at a major surprise at the end of the first episode that left him screaming and jumping with excitement.
Fans won't have to wait long to dive into this new world, as "Like a Dragon: Yakuza" is set to premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime Video on October 24. The first three episodes will be available simultaneously, with the remaining three episodes following on November 1.
