Netflix Developing Dungeons & Dragons Live-Action Series, Eyes Expansive D&D Universe

Netflix is crafting a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series, sources confirm.

According to Deadline, The Forgotten Realms is being brought to life by director Shawn Levy, known for Deadpool & Wolverine, alongside writer-showrunner Drew Crevello of WeCrashed fame and Hasbro.

The Forgotten Realms serves as the iconic fantasy backdrop for the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop game, previously featured in the film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and Larian Studios’ hit video game, Baldur’s Gate 3.

Deadline describes this “potential” adaptation as one of Netflix’s most ambitious fantasy television ventures to date. Crevello has penned the pilot and will serve as showrunner, though Netflix and Hasbro have yet to comment officially.

“Following extensive negotiations, typical for such a high-profile IP, the fantasy series is now advancing at Netflix for further development,” reported Nellie Andreeva of Deadline. “If successful, it could spark a broader D&D universe.”

While the live-action Dungeons & Dragons series appears promising, no updates have surfaced regarding a sequel to the fan-favorite Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which struggled at the box office for Paramount Pictures.

In November 2023, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves actor Chris Pine expressed enthusiasm for reprising his role in a sequel, stating he felt “fairly optimistic” about its prospects, but no further developments have been announced.

Paramount CEO Brian Robbins indicated openness to another Dungeons & Dragons film, provided it could be produced on a reduced budget. “We need to find a way to make it more cost-effective,” he noted.

Meanwhile, Amazon’s Secret Level anthology series has incorporated a Dungeons & Dragons animated segment.
