by Zachary May 01,2025

As one of the longest movie franchises of all time, the Fast and Furious series has transformed from modest street racing films to the epitome of over-the-top Hollywood action, amassing nearly $2 billion USD globally. This evolution has resulted in a complex narrative across its twelve films, which include nine mainline entries, one spinoff, and two shorts. With the latest addition, Fast X, now available to stream on Amazon, we've created this comprehensive guide to help you watch the Fast and Furious movies in chronological order.

At the end of this article, you'll also find a list of the films by their release dates, offering an alternative viewing sequence. Note that we do not include the animated series Fast & Furious: Spy Racers in this guide, as it is not essential to the main storyline.

Fast and Furious Movies in Chronological Order

1. The Fast and the Furious (2001)

The saga kicks off with the franchise's inaugural film, The Fast and the Furious. The plot follows Paul Walker's character, Brian O'Conner, an undercover cop tasked with infiltrating a crew of carjackers led by Vin Diesel's Dom Toretto. Brian delves into illegal street racing, befriends Dom, and falls for his sister, Mia Toretto (Jordan Brewster), ultimately choosing his new relationships over his duty. This film introduces Michelle Rodriguez as Letty Ortiz, Dom's love interest.

2. The Turbo Charged Prelude for 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003)

This short film, The Turbo Charged Prelude for 2 Fast 2 Furious, bridges the gap between the first and second films, showing Brian O'Conner's journey from LA to Miami. The six-minute film, devoid of dialogue, captures his escape from law enforcement and his involvement in several races. While not essential, it adds context to Brian's story.

In 2 Fast 2 Furious, the only film without Dom Toretto, we meet Roman Pearce (Tyrese Gibson) and Tej Parker (Chris "Ludacris" Bridges). The plot follows Brian and Roman as they go undercover to dismantle a drug lord's operation in exchange for clearing their criminal records. Eva Mendes plays Monica Fuentes, Brian's new love interest who reappears briefly in Fast Five.
