Final Fantasy 9 25th Anniversary Site Hints at Switch 2 Remake Reveal

by Alexis May 22,2025

Excitement is building once again for the long-rumored Final Fantasy 9 remake, sparked by Square Enix's launch of an official Final Fantasy 9 25th Anniversary website. The site, written in Japanese, highlights the game's original release date of July 7, 2000, and celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. The announcement promises a range of projects, including merchandise and collaborations, to commemorate the milestone, fueling speculation that a much-anticipated remake might finally be revealed.

The timing of the website's launch has not gone unnoticed by fans, especially with Nintendo set to hold a Switch 2-focused Direct on April 2. Many are hopeful that Square Enix might announce the Final Fantasy 9 remake for the Switch 2 during the event. While the website's mention of "various projects" could refer to anything, it has certainly ignited discussions and anticipation among the gaming community.

Last year, Naoki 'Yoshi-P' Yoshida, the producer of Final Fantasy 14, hinted at what a Final Fantasy 9 remake might entail. He cautioned that due to the game's extensive content, it might not fit into a single title, suggesting a multi-part release similar to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which is currently in the middle of a planned trilogy.

In early 2024, Yoshi-P announced Final Fantasy 9-themed extras for the Collector’s Edition and Digital Collector’s Edition of the Final Fantasy 14 expansion Dawntrail. These include the Ark summon as a mount and a wind-up Princess Garnet minion, with pre-orders receiving a wind-up Zidane minion. During PAX East, Yoshi-P playfully hinted at the significance of these Final Fantasy 9 references, further teasing fans with a zipped-lip gesture.

While some games on the list, like the Chrono Cross remaster, Kingdom Hearts 4, and the Final Fantasy 7 remake for PC, have since been confirmed or released, the Final Fantasy 9 remake and Final Fantasy Tactics remain unconfirmed. Additionally, a Final Fantasy 9 animated series was reported to be in development in June 2021, though no further updates have been provided since.
