GeoGuessr Faces Backlash With Poor Steam Ratings

by Noah Oct 23,2025

GeoGuessr Steam Edition faces overwhelming negative reviews

GeoGuessr Steam Edition, a new adaptation of the popular browser-based geography game, launched on May 8 but has already become one of Steam's lowest-rated titles based on player feedback.

A Beloved Browser Game's Rocky Steam Transition

The original browser version enjoys massive success with 85 million players, offering extensive customization including map selection, urban/rural settings, regional restrictions, and movement options. The community has also created numerous custom maps.

However, the Steam version currently holds an 84% negative rating across 3,000+ reviews. Players cite aggressive monetization and severe feature limitations compared to the browser edition as primary concerns.

Critical Issues Frustrating Players

Additional complaints highlight several design flaws:

  • Account linking between browser and Steam versions is permanent
  • No option to log out from the Steam client
  • Missing single-player practice mode
  • Free amateur mode appears populated by bots
  • Browser subscriptions don't transfer except for Elite Yearly tier

The developers clarify these limitations in their FAQ, noting the Steam edition requires separate access. They position the $30 annual Steam Pass as a one-time purchase alternative to browser subscriptions.

Limited Free Gameplay Raises Concerns

While marketed as free-to-play, the Steam version currently offers:

  • Under one hour of free content (per IGN testing)
  • Just one game mode (Duels)
  • Only the Amateur Division available

GeoGuessr browser premium subscription plans

The browser version similarly restricts free users to three daily rounds, requiring one of three paid tiers for full access. Only the top two tiers ($2.99/$4.99 monthly) include Steam access.

Developer Response and Future Plans

GeoGuessr's marketing head Tomas Jonson told IGN:

"This early access launch aligns with our vision of making the game available across platforms. We're excited about new possibilities like Steam friend integration and enhanced anti-cheat measures."

The team acknowledges monetization feedback and plans at least six months of early access for improvements. They aim to add new modes, maps, and competitive features based on player input.

Jonson noted the Street View data costs necessitate ongoing revenue: "We appreciate the community's engagement and will continue incorporating feedback as we develop the Steam Edition."
