George R.R. Martin Endorses Adaptation of 'Game of Thrones' Show

by Jacob Feb 25,2025

George R.R. Martin, author of A Song of Ice and Fire, has declared HBO's A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a Game of Thrones spin-off, a remarkably faithful adaptation.

In a recent blog post, Martin revealed that the six-episode series has completed production and is slated for release later this year, possibly in the fall. Unlike his previous experience with House of the Dragon, Martin expressed enthusiastic approval, stating he "loved" the series after viewing all six episodes (the final two in rough cuts). He praised the casting, highlighting the performances of Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and Dexter Sol Ansell as Prince Aegon Targaryen (Egg). He also teased viewers to anticipate the introduction of the Laughing Storm and Tanselle Too-Tall.

Martin emphasized the series' adherence to the source material, The Hedge Knight, describing it as "as faithful an adaptation as a reasonable man could hope for." However, he cautioned potential viewers that the show prioritizes character development over large-scale action sequences, explaining that while a significant fight scene is included, it lacks the dragons, epic battles, and White Walkers characteristic of Game of Thrones. The series focuses on themes of duty, honor, and chivalry.

HBO has already released promotional images and a short teaser trailer for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, despite its release date still being several months away.

Martin concluded his post with a humorous reference to his long-awaited novel, The Winds of Winter, and his future plans to adapt subsequent Dunk and Egg novellas, including "The Sworn Sword" and "The Village Hero."
