GTA 6 Mapping Project Surges with Trailer 2: 'Information Overload'

by Zoe May 19,2025

The highly dedicated GTA 6 mapping project has shifted into high gear following the release of Trailer 2, with one of its lead members telling IGN that "it really changes everything for us for the rest of the year." The GTA 6 Mapping Discord is abuzz with excitement as its 370 members, soon to surpass 400, dive into the wealth of new details provided by the trailer.

"It's an information overload - it really changes everything for us for the rest of the year," said Garza, who oversees the Discord server, in an interview with IGN. "We have so much new content to work on and we're really just getting started."

The GTA 6 Mapping Discord originated in the wake of the significant September 2022 leaks, which some fans speculate were hinted at by Rockstar at the beginning of Trailer 2. The project's aim has been to construct the most accurate GTA 6 map possible, a task previously reliant on the leaks and December 2023's Trailer 1. However, the latest map version, released by project lead DuPz0r at the end of March, has quickly become outdated due to the flood of new information from Trailer 2.

In addition to confirming plot details, characters, and releasing 70 new GTA 6 screenshots, Rockstar has unveiled information and images of the explorable areas within the state of Leonida, GTA 6's rendition of Florida. Confirmed locations from this week's reveal include Vice City, GTA 6’s version of Miami, the tropical archipelago of Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga, a national landmark situated at the state's northern border.

The volunteers are meticulously analyzing the trailer to pinpoint the exact locations of every element shown and to correlate images of fictional spaces with their real-world equivalents. This effort will contribute to the creation of an updated map, which fans eagerly anticipate will offer the most comprehensive preview of what GTA 6 will deliver upon its release in May 2026.

Should Rockstar release additional GTA 6 assets, such as gameplay footage, the volunteers are prepared to resume their mapping efforts. The true accuracy of their work will only be revealed once GTA 6 is released and the fan-created map can be compared to the actual game.

However, the GTA 6 mapping project faces the looming threat of being shut down by Take-Two, Rockstar's parent company. In March, a modder who developed a playable version of the GTA 6 map within GTA 5 halted their project after receiving a takedown notice from Take-Two. This mod was based on the GTA 6 mapping project.

Last year, when asked by IGN about potential legal action from Take-Two, Garza expressed "some mild concern." He noted, "This project has been going on for quite some time with no direct disruption to our community. However, I always keep it into consideration if they intend on communicating with us in the future for any reason. We do not explicitly showcase leaked material in the map, so I do not believe they would take that down in particular. I believe they are aware that this project gathers popularity and interest in the game, since everyone wants to see how the world may look like. This can be one of the reasons why they haven’t done anything, since it’s not too negative. If I were ever in the situation of receiving a cease and desist though, then I would respectfully cease and desist. As we get closer to a precise map, it may be possible to receive that notice in the future."

As we await further developments, stay tuned for more on GTA 6, including all the details we've uncovered so far and the latest fan theories inspired by Trailer 2.
