Halo-Inspired Shooter Announces Sequel
Splitgate 2: The "Halo Meets Portal" Sequel Arrives in 2025
1047 Games, the creators of the hit multiplayer FPS Splitgate, has announced a sequel! Get ready for the Sol Splitgate League, launching in 2025.
A Fresh Take on a Familiar Favorite
Revealed on July 18th with a stunning cinematic trailer, Splitgate 2 aims for longevity. CEO Ian Proulx stated their goal is to "create a game that endures for a decade or more." Building upon the original's arena shooter inspiration, the developers focused on crafting "a deep and satisfying gameplay loop" using modern game development techniques.
Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing, explained the refined portal mechanics: "We re-evaluated our approach to portals, aiming for a system where skilled players could truly excel, but without making portal usage mandatory for success."
While specific gameplay details remain under wraps, Splitgate 2 will utilize Unreal Engine 5, remain free-to-play, and introduce a compelling faction system. Expect a familiar core experience, but with a completely refreshed look and feel. The game will launch in 2025 on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.
The original Splitgate, often described as a blend of Halo and Portal, quickly gained popularity after a successful demo attracted 600,000 downloads in a single month. Its immense early success even led to server outages as the studio scaled up capacity. After a period in early access, the original Splitgate officially launched on September 15, 2022, with the developers subsequently announcing a pause on updates to focus on "building the game fans deserve," hinting at "revolutionary changes."
New Factions, Maps, and More
The trailer showcases the Sol Splitgate League and three distinct factions, promising enhanced gameplay depth. According to the Steam page, each faction offers unique playstyles: Aeros for fast-paced dashes, Meridian for tactical time manipulation, and Sabrask for aggressive, high-powered combat. It's confirmed that Splitgate 2 won't be a hero shooter in the style of Overwatch or Valorant.
While gameplay specifics are saved for Gamescom 2024 (August 21-25), the trailer assures fans that it accurately reflects the Splitgate 2 experience, showcasing real maps, weapons, portal effects, and the return of dual-wielding.
A Deep Dive into Lore
Splitgate 2 will not feature a single-player campaign. However, a mobile companion app will allow players to explore the game's lore through comics, collect character cards, and even take a quiz to determine their ideal faction.
