HBO Nears Dumbledore Deal with Lithgow

by Carter Feb 22,2025

HBO is reportedly in advanced negotiations with acclaimed actor John Lithgow, known for his role as Lord Farquaad in Shrek, to portray the iconic Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in their upcoming Harry Potter series.

While Variety reports Lithgow is nearing a deal, HBO remains tight-lipped, offering only a standard non-confirmation statement regarding pre-production rumors. This follows November reports naming Mark Rylance as the frontrunner for the Dumbledore role. An HBO spokesperson stated, "We appreciate the considerable speculation surrounding this high-profile project. As pre-production continues, we will only confirm casting details upon finalizing agreements."

Lithgow's extensive credits include The World According to Garp, Terms of Endearment, Footloose, Dexter, and The Crown, showcasing his versatility and range.

Despite numerous reports suggesting casting progress, details remain scarce. HBO's search for the young leads—Harry, Ron, and Hermione—continues, although Paapa Essiedu has reportedly been cast as Severus Snape.

The series will prioritize British talent, mirroring the film adaptations. This aligns with author J.K. Rowling's reported involvement in the casting process.

Announced in April 2023, the Harry Potter series aims for a faithful, yet more in-depth adaptation of the novels than the films allowed. Succession producers Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod (also a Game of Thrones veteran) are attached to direct and write.
