Guerrilla Games' Horizon Multiplayer: Aiming High or Playing it Safe?

Guerrilla Games' upcoming Horizon multiplayer game is generating significant buzz, with recent job postings suggesting ambitious player projections or perhaps a cautious approach to avoid launch-day server issues.

The unannounced Horizon multiplayer title has been hinted at for years, with job listings dating back to 2018. Following the success of Horizon Forbidden West and its Burning Shores DLC, Guerrilla's focus has largely shifted to this project, aside from collaborations on titles like Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered and LEGO Horizon Adventures.

A recent job posting for a Senior Platform Engineer reveals a key requirement: "proven experience building and operating multi-service, 1M+ user globally distributed systems across multiple public cloud providers." This strongly suggests Guerrilla anticipates a player base exceeding one million. This could reflect genuine confidence in the game's appeal, or a proactive strategy to prevent server overload issues like those experienced by Helldivers 2 at launch. The massive unexpected popularity of Helldivers 2 on PS5 and PC led to significant server strain, impacting both new and returning players. Guerrilla likely aims to avoid a similar scenario.

While a Horizon multiplayer game's success isn't guaranteed, Guerrilla's preparedness is commendable. The game's extended development period, coupled with previous job postings hinting at a 2025 release, increases the likelihood of a reveal this year. Given the time needed for a full mainline Horizon entry, this 2025 release likely refers to the anticipated multiplayer title. The scale of the planned infrastructure suggests a significant investment and high expectations for the game's success.
