Insomniac Games Co-Studio Heads Interviewed Following Founder and CEO Ted Price's Retirement
Insomniac Games Eyes More Game-to-Screen Adaptations
Following the announcement of founder and long-time CEO Ted Price's retirement, Insomniac Games, creators of the beloved Ratchet and Clank franchise, expressed their keen interest in adapting more of their games for film. Co-Studio Head Ryan Schneider shared this sentiment during a Wednesday interview with Variety.
"Thinking back to the Ratchet and Clank movie from a few years ago, we got an early start on that process," Schneider stated. "So, naturally, we're interested in pursuing more projects like that. We have a particular fondness for Ratchet and Clank."
While the 2016 Ratchet and Clank film received mixed reviews, Insomniac Games, now under the Sony umbrella since 2019, feels confident about future game-to-screen adaptations. They point to Sony's successful track record, particularly the critically acclaimed The Last of Us series, as a strong indicator of their potential.
Sony's Expanding Video Game Adaptations Portfolio
Insomniac's interest aligns perfectly with Sony's proven success in adapting its game properties for film and television. Recent successes include the 2022 Uncharted film and the highly praised 2023 The Last of Us series.
Sony further solidified its commitment to this strategy at CES 2025, announcing several upcoming projects. The Last of Us Season 2 premieres on HBO in April 2025, alongside a live-action Until Dawn film. A Ghost of Tsushima Legends anime series is slated for Crunchyroll in 2027, while a Helldivers feature film and a Horizon Zero Dawn live-action adaptation are also in development, though release dates remain unannounced.
Insomniac Founder and CEO Ted Price Retires After 30 Years
Alongside the interview with Insomniac's co-Studio Heads, the company announced the retirement of its founder and CEO, Ted Price, after three decades at the helm. Price oversaw the creation of iconic franchises like Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, and Marvel’s Spider-Man. He explained his decision, stating, "I actually made this decision last year. After over 30 years leading Insomniac, I felt it was time to step aside and allow others to guide the team forward."
Three veteran Insomniac employees—Ryan Schneider, Chad Dezern, and Jen Huang—will assume leadership as Co-Studio Heads. Price expressed his confidence in this transition, stating, "I firmly believe that our continued success hinges on leaders at the top who intimately understand our methods, have contributed to building our culture and processes, and have earned the team's trust."
