"Jack Wall on Missing Mass Effect 3: 'It's Just Part of the Deal'"
In a revealing interview with The Guardian, renowned composer Jack Wall opened up about his departure from the Mass Effect series after contributing the iconic soundtracks to the first two games. Wall's music, particularly for 2010's Mass Effect 2, has been celebrated as a cornerstone of the series, with tracks like the thrilling 'Suicide Mission' often hailed as a highlight. Despite his significant contributions, Wall did not return for the 2012 release of Mass Effect 3, a decision that left many fans bewildered.
Wall attributed his exit to a strained relationship with Casey Hudson, who was leading the Mass Effect development at the time. "Casey was not particularly happy with me at the end," Wall shared. He expressed pride in the Mass Effect 2 score, which earned a Bafta nomination, yet acknowledged that it did not meet Hudson's expectations. While The Guardian hinted at "creative tension" between the two, Wall kept his comments on the matter brief, stating, "Fallouts like that happen, it’s just part of the deal. It’s one of the few times in my career that’s happened, and it was a tough time, but it is what it is."
Reflecting on the challenges of creating the music for Mass Effect 2, Wall described the process as incredibly demanding. "It was the biggest mind-f\*\*\*ing thing I’ve ever done in my entire life," he recounted, noting the intense pressure as the development team scrambled to complete the game. Despite the difficulties, Wall's dedication paid off, resulting in what he considers one of the best ending sequences in gaming.
Following his work on Mass Effect 2, Wall shifted gears to compose for the Call of Duty series, with his most recent project being the soundtrack for Black Ops 6. Meanwhile, BioWare is gearing up for the next installment in the Mass Effect franchise after releasing Dragon Age: The Veilguard, though they have yet to reveal who will take on the role of composer for the upcoming game.
