LEGO Lord of the Rings: Shire - Epic Quest Begins
LEGO is set to enchant fans once again with the release of The Lord of the Rings: The Shire, launching on April 2 for LEGO Insiders and April 5 for the general public. This new addition marks the third Lord of the Rings set released in the last three years, following the impressive 6,167-piece Rivendell in 2023 and the monumental 5,471-piece Barad-dûr in 2024.

The new 2,017-piece set, The Shire, brings to life the enchanting world of Bilbo Baggins' hobbit-hole, meticulously crafted to capture the charm and warmth of the beloved setting. Every wall is rounded or curved, and each surface is adorned with accessories, creating an immersive experience. LEGO provided IGN with an early copy for a test build, and while the set beautifully embodies the spirit of the Shire, it comes with a disproportionately high price tag relative to its piece count.

Set #10354 recreates Bilbo Baggins' home as seen during his "eleventy-first" birthday celebration. The set includes nine minifigures: Bilbo Baggins, Frodo, Mrs. Proudfoot, Farmer Proudfoot, Merry, Pippin, Rosie Cotton, Samwise Gamgee, and Gandalf the Grey. The hobbit-hole, nestled into a green-bricked hillside, features three distinct rooms: the main foyer, a study, and a dining and sitting area. These rooms are built separately and connected with clamps, ensuring a seamless exterior while maintaining a cozy interior.
The designers have gone to great lengths to capture the essence of Bilbo's home, with patterned rugs, letters from well-wishers, and food scattered throughout. Notable elements include a wedge of cheese above the fireplace, a loaf of bread, and libations on the windowsill. The set also showcases artifacts from Bilbo's adventures, such as the Mithril Coat in a chest by the door and a well-worn map on the table.
A single mechanical feature, utilizing LEGO Technic, allows you to switch the fireplace display between a charred envelope and the One Ring, a nod to the iconic scene from The Fellowship of the Ring. The rooms are designed to be wider than tall, reflecting the hobbits' spacious living environment, while the exterior construction requires careful attention to achieve the natural curves of the hillside.
Building The Shire evokes a tactile pleasure reminiscent of running one's hand over a detailed Earth globe, with the use of curved green pieces creating a realistic landscape. The set conveys the deep connection hobbits have with their environment, topped with a tree whose branches drape over the hilltop.
Additional elements include a birthday cake, a Party Tree with colorful lanterns, a patterned tent, a red dragon firework, Gandalf's horse-drawn carriage, and a group of barrels with interlocking gears that allow Bilbo to "disappear" at the end of his party. These elements enhance the set's storytelling potential and connection to the films.
While The Shire is a simpler build compared to Rivendell and Barad-dûr, its straightforward design aligns with the hobbits' modest lifestyle. However, the set's price of $270 for 2,017 pieces is significantly above the standard metric of 10 cents per brick. This pricing is notably higher than other sets, including the LEGO Star Wars sets, which are often subject to a "Disney tax" due to their licensed nature.
Despite its cost, The Shire remains the most affordable option for Lord of the Rings fans unable to purchase the larger Rivendell and Barad-dûr sets. The question remains whether LEGO's goodwill and the franchise's popularity can sustain this pricing model. Nonetheless, the set's aesthetic appeal is undeniable.
