Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy Responds to Retirement Reports, Confirms Star Wars Succession Plan

by Jason Mar 04,2025

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy addresses retirement rumors, stating unequivocally that she is not retiring. Recent reports suggesting her departure at the end of 2025 sparked speculation, with varying confirmations from different news outlets.

Kennedy clarifies her position in a statement to Deadline, confirming collaboration with Disney CEO Bob Iger on a succession plan. While acknowledging the eventual need for a successor, she emphasizes her continued involvement with Lucasfilm, including overseeing production of the upcoming Mandalorian movie and a new Star Wars film directed by Shawn Levy. She notes the significant expansion of Lucasfilm's operations since she assumed the presidency 13 years ago, including the advent of streaming services.

Kennedy vehemently denies being pushed out or needing replacement, asserting that the notion is entirely false. Her tenure has overseen the sequel trilogy (Episodes VII-IX), and the launch of numerous successful Star Wars streaming series, including The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Andor, Ahsoka, Skeleton Crew, and The Acolyte. While acknowledging the mixed reception of some projects, she remains committed to the future of Lucasfilm.

Although a succession plan is underway, Kennedy confirms the timing of her departure from the president role is entirely her decision and currently undetermined. She declines to comment on Dave Filoni's potential candidacy for the position. The overall message is one of continued involvement with Lucasfilm, albeit with a planned transition of leadership in the future.
