M3GAN Re-Release: 'Second Screen' and Live Chatbot Added

by Scarlett May 02,2025

Top horror studio Blumhouse is celebrating its 15th anniversary by bringing the 2022 hit film M3GAN back to theaters in a limited engagement ahead of the sequel's release. This move, however, comes with a twist that's stirring some controversy: the inclusion of smartphone usage during screenings.

As part of their Halfway to Halloween initiative, Shudder is set to screen M3GAN, along with Ma and Annabelle, for one-night-only events enhanced with Meta's "Movie Mate" technology. This innovative feature allows audience members to interact with M3GAN through a chatbot and access exclusive content in real-time via a second screen.

Play"Movie Mate is exclusively available to those in the theater and can be activated by sending a direct message to the Instagram account @M3GAN," Blumhouse detailed in a report by Variety.

"The initiative is designed to enhance the 'second screen' viewing experience, leveraging Meta's capabilities to boost excitement before the release of M3GAN 2.0 on June 27," the studio added.

Fans attending these screenings can look forward to sneak peeks, exclusive messages from the films' directors and talent, and surprise special appearances in select locations. While this approach aims to generate buzz for the upcoming sequel, it raises questions about the impact on the traditional theatrical experience. Only time will tell how audiences respond to this interactive format, but it's hoped that it won't become a standard for regular screenings.

The M3GAN screening is scheduled for April 30 across various theaters nationwide, with Annabelle following on May 7 and Ma on May 14. M3GAN 2.0 is slated to hit U.S. theaters on June 27.
