Marvel Star Simu Liu Says He's Working to Get Sleeping Dogs a Film Adaptation

by Riley Mar 19,2025

Simu Liu, the star of Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is spearheading efforts to revive the cancelled Sleeping Dogs film adaptation. Newsweek reports Liu responded to a fan on X/Twitter, stating he’s actively working with rights holders to bring the game to the big screen.

This news comes as a surprise, following the film's cancellation announcement earlier this month. Donnie Yen, initially slated to star in the 2017 adaptation, confirmed its demise, citing years of work and investment ultimately proving fruitless due to the unpredictable nature of Hollywood. Yen's involvement ended after years of waiting and investment in securing drafts and rights.

Liu's intervention offers a glimmer of hope for fans of the critically acclaimed 2012 video game. The original Sleeping Dogs, released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, follows undercover detective Wei Shen as he navigates the treacherous world of Hong Kong's Triad gangs. The game's high quality (earning an 8/10 from IGN) is a testament to its potential for a successful film adaptation, despite the lack of sequels. Whether Liu will succeed in securing the rights and moving the project forward remains to be seen.
