Beginner's Guide to Rune Slayer Fishing

by Scarlett Nov 25,2025

If you ever questioned whether *Rune Slayer* qualifies as an MMORPG, let this settle the debate: it features fishing. And as any true gamer knows, fishing mechanics automatically elevate a game to MMORPG status. Jokes aside, you're here to master fishing in *Rune Slayer*, and we've got you covered. Yes, we struggled with it initially too, but we've cracked the system and are ready to share how fishing actually works in this game. Fair warning: It's nowhere near as straightforward as in dedicated fishing games.

Before casting your line, you must accept the fishing quest from Simon the Fisherman (the elderly NPC standing near piers where Barracudas swim). Simon requests you catch 5 "fish" (note the quotation marks), rewarding you with a Tackle Box (we'll explain its importance shortly).

Here's the catch: You'll need both a fishing rod and bait - conveniently sold by none other than Simon himself. Purchase the Wood Fishing Rod and Worms from him. While most players suggest 5 worms minimum, we grabbed 10 for good measure. Important note: You don't equip the bait - Worms simply need to occupy inventory space. Each successful catch consumes one Worm automatically.

The surprising revelation? Fishing appears impossible with fewer than 5 Worms. Our early attempts with a single Worm failed completely. Only after stocking up did we start catching aquatic creatures. Pro tip: Keep Worms in your hotbar for easy tracking. With these preparations complete, you're ready for actual fishing.

Begin by selecting your Wood Fishing Rod (place it in your hotbar or access from inventory - no equipment slot needed).

Hold M1 to cast, ensuring your line reaches water (the pier near Simon works perfectly).

Watch your bobber intently - when it produces one or two ripples, hit M1 again to reel in. Simple?

The system isn't foolproof - expect plenty of unsuccessful attempts. You'll frequently catch nothing or junk items, but Simon counts debris toward your quota (hence our earlier "fish" quotation marks).

The process boils down to: cast, watch for ripples, reel, repeat until five catches (of any sort). Personally, we only caught two actual fish - the rest were discarded cups.

After five "catches", report back to Simon to claim your reward - the precious Tackle Box. Use it to store leftover Worms and free up inventory space permanently.
