Monster Hunter Wilds Bugs and MTX Can't Stop Massive Launch
Monster Hunter Wilds boasts over 1 million concurrent Steam players despite receiving mixed reviews. Let's delve into the game's PC performance and current issues.
Monster Hunter Wilds: A Rocky Launch Despite Massive Popularity
Mixed Reviews Despite a Million Concurrent Players
Despite mixed Steam reviews, Monster Hunter (MH) Wilds has surpassed 1 million concurrent players, peaking at 1,384,608 according to SteamDB. This significantly eclipses its predecessors: MH World (334,684 peak) and MH Rise (231,360 peak). However, its Steam page currently shows a "Mixed" rating, with only 57% positive reviews out of 54,669. Many negative reviews cite poor PC optimization and performance issues.
Capcom Addresses PC Performance Concerns
Capcom acknowledged the negative feedback regarding MH Wilds' PC performance. On February 28, 2025, the official Monster Hunter Status account on Twitter (X) addressed these concerns and offered solutions. Their post linked to the MH Wilds support website, detailing troubleshooting steps. These include updating video drivers, installing the latest Windows updates, performing a clean video driver installation, and more. For persistent issues, Capcom directed players to the official troubleshooting thread on the Steam community page for more detailed assistance.
Game-Breaking Bug Impedes Story Progress
A critical bug is currently blocking story progression for some players. The necessary NPC in Main Mission: Chapter 5-2, "A World Turned Upside Down," is failing to appear. Monster Hunter Status confirmed awareness of this issue on March 2, 2025, and stated they are actively working on a fix. Further issues, including the unavailability of "Grill a Meal" and "Ingredient Center" features (despite meeting requirements) and Smithy access problems, have also been reported and addressed with hotfixes across various platforms.
Character Customization Locked Behind Microtransactions
MH Wilds utilizes microtransactions for character and Palico appearance customization. The "Monster Hunter Wilds - Character Edit Voucher Three-Voucher Pack" ($6.00) allows three character creation attempts across all digital storefronts. While basic adjustments like hair, eyebrow and facial color, makeup, and clothing are free, further alterations require purchasing this voucher, with a separate voucher available for Palico customization. A combined pack offering three edits for both character and Palico is also available for $10.00. Note that a single free character edit voucher is being offered by Capcom. These microtransactions were not present during the game's testing phase, but their inclusion was previously announced by Capcom.
