Mortal Kombat 2: First Look at Karl Urban's Johnny Cage

by Owen Feb 20,2025

Get ready for another round of fatalities! The sequel to the 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot is officially on its way, and we've just gotten our first glimpse of a major new addition to the cast: Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban.

Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon unveiled a poster featuring Urban as the iconic Hollywood actor and Mortal Kombat fighter. The poster cleverly mimics a fictional Johnny Cage movie poster, complete with the over-the-top action we've come to expect from the character – including, notably, two motorcycles leaping from flames.

Mortal Kombat 2 will continue the story from the 2021 film, which starred Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, and Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero. Joining Urban in the sequel are Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, and Damon Herriman as Quan Chi.

The first film focused on Cole Young's introduction to the Mortal Kombat universe and the long-standing rivalry between Scorpion and Sub-Zero. While plot details for the sequel remain under wraps, the vast lore of the Mortal Kombat video games provides a wealth of potential storylines for the filmmakers to explore.

The original Mortal Kombat film was initially intended for a theatrical release but was ultimately released on HBO Max due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Mortal Kombat 2 is set for a theatrical debut on October 24, 2025.

Our review of the first film awarded it a 7 out of 10, praising its "spectacular display of blood, guts, and effects-heavy martial arts battles.”
