MultiVersus Shuts Down, Players Mourn Beloved Game
MultiVersus, the free-to-play crossover fighting game released in 2024, will soon be taken offline permanently.
Player First Games revealed in January that MultiVersus Season 5 would be its final season, confirming the game will shut down for good on May 30, 2025, at 5 PM PDT (12 PM EDT). The title was widely seen as a significant disappointment for Warner Bros. Discovery; during a financial call in November 2024, the company acknowledged that MultiVersus fell far short of expectations, leading to a $100 million writedown for its gaming division. This brought total losses to $300 million following the underwhelming release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League earlier that January.
Just one month after that announcement, Warner Bros. canceled its planned Wonder Woman game and closed three studios: Monolith Productions, WB San Diego, and Player First Games, the developer behind MultiVersus.
In a thread titled “Tomorrow Multiversus shuts down, what are your final thoughts on the game,” hundreds of fans shared their memories and celebrated their favorite moments.
“MultiVersus was a dream come true—a platform fighter built around fast-paced offense and 2v2 matches that emphasized teamwork,” one player wrote. “Beyond the core concept, the voice casting was outstanding. So many original actors returned, like the late Kevin Conroy as Batman, Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, Kate Micucci as Velma, John DiMaggio as Jake, and Eric Bauza as Bugs Bunny and Marvin the Martian. The character interactions during and after matches were fantastic.
“While some character choices and move designs were puzzling—like Banana Guard or Shaggy’s Ultra Instinct-inspired moves—most of the movesets were brilliantly creative. There will never be another game quite like MultiVersus.”

“Nothing will compare to the excitement of playing the beta back in ’22,” another fan replied. “I was completely hooked by the game’s fast-paced action. I remember being sick and playing it nonstop. I’ll really miss it, and I hope it makes a comeback someday, maybe as a sequel.”
“This game will always have a special place in my heart, right next to PlayStation All-Stars,” another player shared nostalgically, while someone else added: “Tom and Jerry were among the most unique and enjoyable fighters I’ve ever played—they revived my love for the genre.”

Some are holding out hope, though most players acknowledge the game is gone for good, especially given the licensing complexities involved in reviving it. Still, a few dedicated fans are exploring ways to preserve the experience after the servers go dark.
“While MultiVersus may not become a party staple, its refreshing team-based combat makes it a standout online platform fighter,” we noted in IGN’s MultiVersus review, where it scored an 8.
