Warner Bros. Games has announced the closure of MultiVersus, its popular platform fighter, after the completion of its fifth season. The game will officially shut down on May 30, 2025.

Season 5: The Final Chapter

The official announcement, made on January 31, 2025, confirmed that Season 5, launching February 4, 2025, will be the game's last. This season will introduce two highly anticipated characters: Aquaman (DC) and Lola Bunny (Looney Tunes). All Season 5 content will be unlockable through gameplay. Following the season's conclusion, MultiVersus will be removed from all digital storefronts (PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store). No official reason for the shutdown has been provided.

Offline Play: A Lasting Legacy

While online services cease, players can continue enjoying MultiVersus offline. A local gameplay mode, supporting solo play against AI or multiplayer with up to three friends, will remain accessible. To retain this offline functionality, players must download the latest game version between February 4th and May 30th, 2025. The game will automatically create a local save file linked to the player's online account, preserving all earned and purchased content.

Real-money transactions were halted on January 31, 2025. Any remaining Gleamium (in-game currency) can be used until Season 5's end.

A Brief History and Uncertain Future

Launched in July 2022 as a free-to-play title, MultiVersus quickly gained popularity, drawing comparisons to Super Smash Bros. Following a relaunch in May 2024 with significant updates (new characters, rollback netcode, PvE mode, etc.), the game faced ongoing challenges, including technical issues and player dissatisfaction. Reportedly, player counts dropped significantly in July 2024.

Upon its closure, MultiVersus will leave behind a roster of 35 playable characters from diverse franchises. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed gratitude for the community's support. MultiVersus remains available for download until May 30, 2025, on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
