NieR: Automata - Full Character Roster Revealed
Quick Links
NieR: Automata offers a captivating narrative experience spread across three distinct playthroughs. While the initial two playthroughs share some common ground, the third playthrough unveils an extensive continuation of the story, ensuring that players remain engaged even after the first credits roll. To fully explore the game's rich tapestry of endings, ranging from detailed to succinct, you'll need to dive into multiple playthroughs and switch between characters. Here’s a detailed look at the three playable characters and the mechanics of switching between them.
All Playable Characters In NieR: Automata
The narrative of NieR: Automata centers around three key characters: 2B, 9S, and A2. 2B and 9S, as partners, take the spotlight throughout the game, although the extent of their screen time varies based on your progression through the playthroughs. Each character brings a unique combat style to the table, enhancing the gameplay experience even when using the same plug-in chips across all three playthroughs. While all three characters are playable, the process of switching between them isn't always straightforward.
How To Switch Characters In NieR: Automata
In your initial playthrough, character switching isn't freely available. The sequence of character play is as follows:
- Playthrough 1 - You play as 2B.
- Playthrough 2 - You switch to 9S.
- Playthrough 3 - You'll alternate between 2B, 9S, and A2 as dictated by the storyline.
Upon reaching one of the main endings, you unlock the Chapter Select mode, which allows you greater freedom in choosing your playable character. Within Chapter Select, you can revisit any of the game's 17 chapters. You'll notice numbers on the right side of the screen that indicate completed or incomplete side quests. If a character has any numbers during a specific chapter, you have the option to replay that chapter as that character.
However, some chapters, particularly those in the later stages of playthrough 3, are restricted to specific characters and cannot be changed. Using Chapter Select, you can switch characters at any point, but you'll need to navigate to a part of the story where that character was originally playable. Importantly, any progress made in Chapter Select mode is saved, allowing you to level up all three characters' shared levels as you aim for the maximum level.
