Nintendo Confirms Switch 2 GameCube Controller Compatibility, Warns of Potential Issues

Nintendo recently addressed compatibility concerns surrounding its newly released GameCube controller, emphasizing potential "issues" when attempting to use it with contemporary Nintendo Switch 2 titles. During the recent 60-minute Nintendo Direct event, the company introduced the GameCube controller, noting in fine print that it would only be compatible with GameCube games within the Nintendo Switch Online retro library, not other Switch 2 games.

In further clarification, Nintendo reiterated that the GameCube controller is primarily intended for use with GameCube games. While it may be possible to use the controller for other Switch 2 games, players might encounter problems due to the absence of essential buttons and features present in modern controllers.

The company also restated its earlier warning that the GameCube controller is exclusively compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2 system. "The Nintendo GameCube controller is designed for use with the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection of games and is an optional way to play those games," Nintendo stated in a press release to Nintendo Life. "Since it doesn’t have all the buttons and features found in other controllers that can be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 system, there may be some issues when playing other games. The Nintendo GameCube controller can only be used on Nintendo Switch 2 and is not compatible with Nintendo Switch."
