Nintendo Switch 2 Direct Shared By Super Smash Bros. Creator and Fans Are Going Wild Over a New Game

by Christopher Mar 28,2025

The gaming community is buzzing with excitement after Masahiro Sakurai, the mastermind behind the Super Smash Bros. series, re-shared the announcement for the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct scheduled for April 2. Accompanying the post was a simple yet thrilling "Ooh!" from Sakurai, igniting speculation and hope among fans that a new installment in the beloved fighting game series might be on the horizon.

While Sakurai's post alone doesn't confirm anything, it adds to a series of subtle hints that have been dropping, suggesting he might be gearing up for a big reveal. In 2022, Sakurai started his own YouTube channel, which he later paused, assuring fans he wasn't finished with game development. His final video hinted at a new project that could be unveiled "sooner or later," further fueling speculation about a new Super Smash Bros. game.

Despite these teases, no official announcements have been made regarding a new Super Smash Bros. game. Sakurai himself has previously expressed uncertainty about how the franchise could surpass the monumental Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Nintendo Switch, which boasts an unprecedented roster including characters like Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7, Sora from Kingdom Hearts, Joker from Persona 5, and Steve and Alex from Minecraft.

However, the possibility of a new Super Smash Bros. game for the Nintendo Switch 2 seems plausible, especially considering the phenomenal sales success of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which has sold over 35.88 million copies. Additionally, Nintendo's track record of launching a new Super Smash Bros. game with each of its consoles since the original on the N64 in 1999 lends further credence to fans' hopes.
