"Nintendo Switch 2 Enhances Original Games"

by Eric Apr 12,2025

The much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 has finally hit the market, and as previously reported, it boasts impressive backward compatibility with games from the original Switch. However, Nintendo is taking it a step further by introducing specially enhanced versions of Switch 1 games for the Switch 2. These enhanced versions, known as Switch 2 Editions, offer more than just graphical upgrades and smoother frame rates.

What Games are Playable on Switch 2?

Nintendo has categorized the games playable on the Switch 2 into three types: native Switch 2 games designed exclusively for the new system, compatible Switch 1 games that can be played directly on the Switch 2, and Switch 2 Edition games. These editions are enhanced versions of Switch 1 games, offering new features and performance boosts.

This categorization does not include the classic games accessible through the Nintendo Switch Online service, which spans titles from the NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, and now the GameCube.

So What Comes in a Switch 2 Edition Game?

The highlight of the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct was the announcement of additional content for Switch 2 Editions. For instance, Super Mario Party Jamboree, originally a Switch game, will feature Jamboree TV in its Switch 2 Edition. This new content will leverage the Joy-Con 2's mouse controls, the Switch 2's microphone, and the separately sold USB-C camera.

In addition to resolution upgrades up to 1440p in TV mode and enhanced frame rates, the Switch 2 Edition will introduce new minigames and improved online functionalities. Another example, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, will support mouse controls with Joy-Con 2 and offer multiple display modes, including Quality Mode at 60fps in 4K when docked, and Performance Mode at 120fps in 1080p when docked. All modes will support HDR.

Other Switch 2 Editions will include new story content, such as Kirby and the Forgotten Land’s Star-Crossed World add-on. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will gain additional support for the Zelda Notes service through the Nintendo Switch App, providing guides and game help. Some games, like Pokemon Legends: Z-A, will focus solely on performance and resolution enhancements.

When are the Switch 2 Edition Games Coming?

The Nintendo Switch 2 is slated for release on June 5, 2025, coinciding with the launch of the first batch of Switch 2 Edition games. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will launch on the same day.

Super Mario Party Jamboree + Jamboree TV will follow on July 24, 2025, while Kirby and the Forgotten Land’s update is scheduled for August 28, 2025. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokemon Legends: Z-A are expected to release sometime in 2025, though exact dates have not been announced yet.

How Much Will Switch 2 Editions Cost?

Pricing for Switch 2 Editions varies. If you do not own the original Switch 1 version, you can purchase the Switch 2 Edition at retail, easily identifiable by its new red-colored physical game case. Digital versions will also feature a prominent Switch 2 logo.

For those who already own the Switch 1 version and wish to upgrade, Nintendo offers upgrade packs. These will be available at select retailers, the official My Nintendo Store, and the Nintendo eShop. The cost of these upgrade packs has not been disclosed yet. Notably, some upgrade packs, such as those for Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, will be included in a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, which also provides access to online features and a classic game library.
