Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con's Potential Mouse Functionality: Evidence from Supply Chain Data

Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons may offer a novel functionality: acting as computer mice. While the widespread adoption of this feature by game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative controller designs.

The evidence originates from Vietnamese customs data obtained by Famiboards user LiC, who has previously uncovered information regarding a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data, a source of numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024, recently revealed references to polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended "to stick to game console handles." This terminology, typically associated with computer mice, strongly suggests the possibility of mouse-like functionality in the Switch 2 Joy-Cons.

Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were identified in the shipping manifests. These numbers haven't been found in public component databases, indicating potentially new, unreleased products. The listed size, 90 x 90mm, is large enough to cover the back of the Joy-Cons, likely requiring trimming during assembly.

Not a First for Handhelds: Lenovo Legion GO Precedent

While innovative for Nintendo, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, features a right controller that functions as a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic housing to enhance its usability as a mouse.

The Legion GO also incorporates magnetic rails for controller attachment—a feature rumored for the Switch 2. These similarities suggest the Legion GO might offer a preview of the Switch 2's design and functionality.
