Nintendo Switch 2 Leaked: Storage Boost Revealed

Leaked GameStop SKUs Suggest Nintendo Switch 2 Will Support microSD Express Cards

Recent leaks suggest a significant upgrade for the Nintendo Switch 2: support for microSD Express cards. This revelation, stemming from GameStop SKUs for purported Switch 2 accessories, points to substantial storage improvements over its predecessor.

The Switch 2's mass production is widely believed to have commenced in late 2024, possibly as early as September, fueled by a surge of hardware leaks throughout Q4 2024. Early January 2025 saw further leaks, this time from Reddit user Opposite-Chemistry96, showcasing GameStop SKUs for "Switch 2 Exp Micro SD Card" accessories in 256GB and 512GB capacities. This strongly indicates compatibility with the microSD Express standard.

A Quantum Leap in Transfer Speeds

The current Nintendo Switch utilizes UHS-I microSD cards, boasting theoretical maximum transfer speeds around 104 MB/s, though real-world performance often peaks near 95 MB/s. In contrast, microSD Express cards leverage the NVMe protocol, achieving speeds of approximately 985 MB/s—a staggering 900% increase. This parallel data transfer method mirrors that of high-performance modern SSDs.

Capacity: A Giant Leap Forward

The advantage extends beyond speed. While UHS-I cards max out at 2TB, microSD Express cards support capacities up to 128TB—a 6,300% improvement. The leaked GameStop pricing suggests a 256GB card will retail for $49.99, and a 512GB card for $84.99. Additional SKUs revealed carrying cases priced at $19.99 and $29.99.

While these accessories are likely unofficial, their appearance further strengthens the rumors surrounding the Switch 2's imminent release. Nintendo has committed to an official reveal before the end of its fiscal year (March 31, 2025), leaving just over two months for the announcement.

UHS-I vs. microSD Express:

Feature UHS-I microSD Express
Transfer Speed ~95 MB/s ~985 MB/s
Max Capacity 2TB 128TB

The leaked information strongly suggests that the Switch 2 will offer a significant upgrade in storage technology, promising faster loading times and greater storage capacity for gamers.
