Nintendo Switch 2 Preorders Face Store Restrictions to Combat Scalpers

by Mila May 28,2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, 2025, and is expected to be in high demand. To ensure that dedicated Switch players can secure their pre-orders, Nintendo is implementing a unique pre-order system on the My Nintendo Store. By registering their interest, those with a Nintendo Account can pre-order a Nintendo Switch 2 system along with select accessories. Once registered, customers will receive an invitation email when it's their turn to pre-order, valid for 72 hours.

To be eligible for this priority system, you must have been a Nintendo Switch Online member with at least 12 months of paid membership and accumulated a minimum of 50 gameplay hours on your current Switch by April 2, 2025. According to the My Nintendo Store's fine print, these invitations are prioritized on a first-come, first-served basis and are non-transferable. They will be sent to the email address linked to your Nintendo Account. Additionally, there is a one-per-account limit for both the system and each accessory during the invitation period. Customers can express interest in either a standard Nintendo Switch 2 or one bundled with Mario Kart World.

Once an order is placed, it will be shipped after purchase, with an approximate shipping date provided at the time of ordering. Nintendo notes that release-day delivery is not guaranteed due to processing and shipment times. These measures seem designed to ensure that the Switch 2 is purchased by gamers who intend to use it, rather than scalpers looking to resell it at a profit.

Scalping has been a significant issue with new releases, as seen with the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Valve successfully mitigated this with the Steam Deck by using a queue system tied to Steam accounts, and now Nintendo is adopting a similar approach. While there will be other avenues to purchase the Switch 2, this pre-order system aims to help long-time Switch owners navigate the potential frenzy surrounding the launch.
