Nintendo Switch 2 Size Revealed

by Connor Mar 29,2025

The unveiling of the Nintendo Switch 2 through its announcement trailer immediately highlights a significant change: the new console is noticeably larger than its predecessor. As the iconic Joy-Con controllers detach from the original Switch, the central tablet section expands and transforms into its enhanced version. This size increase indicates that Nintendo is moving further from the compact handhelds of its past and embracing the trend of larger portable devices like the Steam Deck and iPad.

But just how much bigger is the Switch 2 compared to the original? Although Nintendo hasn't released official size dimensions, we can estimate the new console's size based on the trailer and a recent leak. At CES 2025, we had the opportunity to interact with a Switch 2 mock-up crafted by peripheral designer Genki. Initially, we couldn't confirm the accuracy of this design, but the details in Nintendo's trailer closely match the Genki model. Therefore, our measurements from CES are likely a good representation of the final Switch 2 dimensions.

Let's delve into the specifics:

The Genki mock-up vs Nintendo's official Switch 2 design.

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Size

Our estimates suggest that the **Switch 2 features an 8-inch screen**. This measurement refers to the diagonal of the display section of the tablet, excluding the bezels. This matches a rumor from early 2024, and we anticipate the display to be approximately 177mm wide and 99mm tall.

If these estimates hold true, the Switch 2's screen would be nearly 30% larger diagonally than the original Switch's 6.2-inch LCD display, and **66% larger in overall area**. A larger screen can enhance the gaming experience, provided the display technology meets high standards.

Compared to other handhelds, the Switch 2's display will be 45% larger diagonally and 111% larger in surface area than the Switch Lite's 5.5-inch LCD touchscreen. Against the Switch OLED's 7-inch display, the Switch 2 will be 14% larger diagonally and 30% larger in total area.

In the current market, the Switch 2 will compete with devices like the Steam Deck. The original Steam Deck and the Steam Deck OLED have 7-inch and 7.4-inch screens, respectively, both with a 16:10 aspect ratio. Despite this, the Switch 2's 8-inch screen will still be 8% larger diagonally and 11% larger in overall area than the Steam Deck OLED's display.

Nintendo Switch 2 Overall Console Size

With a significantly larger screen, the Switch 2's overall size has also increased. The original Switch already required spacious pockets, and the Switch 2 will likely fit only in cargo pants pockets or a bag.

Our measurements of the Genki mock-up at CES indicate that the Switch 2 is just over 10.5 inches long and 4.5 inches tall, including the Joy-Cons. After scaling images from the trailer to match our photos and adjusting them to actual size, we estimate the **Switch 2 to be approximately 265mm long and 115mm tall**.

In comparison, the original Switch measures 239mm long and 102mm tall. If our figures are accurate, the **Switch 2 is approximately 25% larger than its predecessor**.

These dimensions would also make the Switch 2 about 61% larger than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm) and roughly 12% smaller than the Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm).

While we couldn't measure the depth of the Genki mock-up precisely, it appears that the Switch 2's thickness will be similar to the original Switch's half-inch thickness. Thus, while the overall footprint of the console is significantly larger, the thickness remains comparable.

Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Size

The transformation animation in the Switch 2 reveal trailer indicates that the Joy-Con controllers will maintain a similar width to the original Switch but will be slightly taller. Using our scaled image analysis, we estimate the new **Switch 2 Joy-Cons to be around 32mm wide and 115mm tall** – the same width as the original controllers (excluding the slot system) but 13mm taller to match the new console's size. If these figures are correct, the **new Joy-Con are approximately 13% larger** than their predecessors.

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Unit Size

By subtracting the Joy-Con dimensions from the overall console size, we estimate that the **Switch 2 screen unit is 200mm long and 115mm tall**. This is around **31% larger than the original Switch** version.

This size accommodates the 8-inch 16:9 screen, with an estimated 11mm bezel on either side and an 8mm bezel along the top and bottom. These bezels are slimmer on the sides than the original Switch but similar in height to the existing console's top and bottom bezels.

Please note that these measurements are our best estimates and may differ from the official dimensions when Nintendo releases them. However, given our experience with the Genki mock-up, we believe our figures are reasonably accurate. We anticipate a console that's roughly 25% larger than the original Switch when we finally get our hands on it later this year.
